2nd water lesson
From the book "Great Stem Projects" a Soap-powered Boat
Service Description
Grandma from Grandma's Place of Natural Learning will be giving you the task of learning and doing a Soap-powered Boat with illustrations she collected from the book. For those impaired the first picture is an explanation in the book about certain structures and how they are structured to hold things traveling on them as bridges. However, it is irrelevant to the Stem lesson started in the second picture of making a little boat to float in a bucket of water. It starts with a blue card paper and a little white card paper (it explains how these are study but not too thin), an oblong pan bucket, two toothpicks, a little cup with a little pant in it (of your choice if you want to paint your boat), a paint brush, and a little liquid soap in another little cup. The STEM picture says to cut a little house of the white card paper with a 1/4" doorway in the middle and a sail from the little blue paper. It says to paint it the color you want it. When the paint is dry stick a toothpick in the sail and stick it into the little boat shaped like a house with the tip forward like a bow. In the third picture the little boat is put in the bucket and a little soap is put on the toothpick and moved in the doorway of the little boat. Watch as the little boat moves away from the toothpick. It is called Surface Tension due to invisible forces caused by the liquid soap to weaken the bonds between water molecules. The book on that page goes on to explain that that is how bubbles are formed in water with soap making suds. The last two picture explain in the fourth picture a boat moves along with invisible forces and our water is formed by molecules that soap breaks up. The fifth and last picture goes on to tell how the seas are formed by this foam and the little doorway collects the soap from the toothpick does not make the little boat move but the invisible forces breaking the water molecules apart that make it move.
