Whatever math lessons of adding items or subtracting them or just numbers it is best done with an item as blocks, circles (or any shaped item0, animals or anything else you can count, add or subtract from a collection even if it is beans or macaroni. Be sure to put it in a written form for them to see on paper or for them to copy from a board or your own notebook or a copy from a book you may be using. I am not sure where you on your work but I would be starting with the number added to 1 and so on up to 9 since September or subtracted from each other. once they have learned how to add a number. Then work at subtracting numbers from each other. (Grandma will look at how far to go herself.)
