Grandma's Place of Natural Learning will begin chapter 1 of Barron's "E-Z Algebra. The introduction presents the four main characters presenting the 1st chapter of the book to the students in the land of Carmorra. The first chapter is called the Rules of Behavior for Numbers. It says, "The people in the strange, faraway land called Carmorra knew arithmetic quite well. Of all the people in the kingdom, the person who could do arithmetic the fastest was Marcus Recordis, the royal keeper of the records. So, it was natural that Ms, O'Reilly the owner and manager of the Carmorra Beachfront Hotel, asked Recordis and the other members of the Royal Court to help her keep track of the hotel guests. Everyone felt it was time for a vacation, so we made plans to spend a few weeks at the hotel. I joined Recordis, the king, and Professor Stanislovsky on the journey. " I know all my addition and multiplication tables by heart," Recordis said proudly. "Well, except for the twelves----I always did have trouble with the twelves. But I know arithmetric so well that I know exactly how numbers behave." We preformed many addition calculations while we were at the hotel. For example if there were 56 guests in the hotel on Monday night and 6 more guests checked in on Tuesday, then there were 56+6=62 guests in the hotel Tuesday night and 10 guests checked out on Wednesday, then there were 62-10=52 guests Wednesday night. One day five families each with four people arrived at the front desk at the same time. We used multiplication to calculate that a total of 5x4=20 people had arrived. (We called the answer to a multiplication problem the product, so we could say that 20 was the product of 5 and 4.) Later that day, 28 people in the scout troop arrived, and we needed to split them up so that there were four people in a room. This problem called for division. We calculated that it would take 28\4=7 rooms to accommodate the entire troop. We had also decided that we could write division problems as fractions, like this." Grandma had to because the keyboard did not have a symbol for division nor exponents. Therefore, she realized she had to rely on pictures to give you problems and tests as well as answers for algebra, algebra 2, geometry, and chemistry. We will carry this on in the next lesson. There are 19 chapters in the book which will take us to May if we cover a chapter every two weeks excluding the holidays.
