End of Electricity and Dancing Snake
Grandma's Place of Natural Learning is finishing up the Dancing Snake of How it Works and Lightning
Service Description
Grandma is just quoting from the book, "How It Works- Electric charge is carried by tiny particles called protons, which carry a positive (+) charge and electrons, which carry a negative (-) charge. Charges exert forces on each other, charges of the same type push apart, or repel, while opposite charges pull together, or attract. Normally, there are equal numbers of positive and negative charges everywhere. However, when you rub the balloon on wool or your hair, it picks up extra electrons, giving the balloon an overall negative charge. This pushes the electrons away it the paper, making the paper's edge positively charged. That is why the paper snake is attracted to the balloon." In Real World: Science-Lightning Storm "Inside a thunderstorm, swirling winds make the crystals in the cloud rub together, which charges them. The base of this cloud becomes negatively charged, which is attracted to a positively ground. This can produce lightning, which takes the shortest route to the ground, often striking trees." They show a picture of a cloud above with lightning striking the tree on the ground with words: "The cloud base is negatively charged." pointing to the cloud, the words: "Lightning mostly strikes tall objects, such as trees." (sometimes people) as it points to the lightning, lastly the words: "The ground becomes positively charged." pointing to the ground under the tree. That is why you do not want to stand under the tree during a storm. That positive charge could attract to your positive charge and electrocute you if it does not strike you in place of the tree. Do not stand in a doorway window to watch either because I heard someone got struck there also. We will make slime in another lesson. Grandma will introduce a Halloween book next lesson in Grandma's Place of Natural Learning called "It's Halloween, You 'Fraidy Mouse! Grandma peaked at some others. There is plenty of scary stories and party idea books out there. Just visit the library or follow Libby to read online. Grandma is not in charge of any parties but maybe later. Have a good weekend.
