Before a child can completely grasp reading they mut be read to daily, pointing out many items in pictures, talked to as babies, taught how to respect books, and many books be provided to them as they learn not to tear them up. Try to buy cheap ones at first, put special ones up on shelves they cannot climb. Listen well to discover their favorites. They will first learn pictures of animals or things in them and may recognize names of things especially driving by businesses or food laces. Then as you are repeating letters of the alphabet and singing the song they learn letters and then words, they recognize in the books read. They will learn how each sound and if given other languages they learn those also. Learn to pick up dictionaries of languages teaching. They will also begin forming various words, and it is good to review them in sound formations and making lists. It is not a matter of memory for some will have that but it will be learning the formation especially as they are growing to be understood. If there is question there don't be scared to talk to a language specialist. Once they are speaking they will learn all the letter sounds they are speaking and start recognizing sound formations as: sh, ch, st, str, sch, schn, tr, th, thr, wh, bl, gr, br, ch. They will also learn vowel formations as: a, e, i, o, u, ae, ea, ei, ie, ao, oa, au, uo, ou, oo (3 sounds together for this formation). They will learn about silent e and long a sound in Spanish for e in their words. They will learn about silent k, gh and ph or the f sound for gh or ph. They will learn about y at the end ll sounds. ow, ar, er, ir, or, ur sounds. They will learn the names for the colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, brown, and the neutral colors black and white (use the for sounds). They will also learn the words for numbers. There are all kinds of learning characters to take advantage of for learning. There are all kinds of songs to use. Many will learn much about the animals and dinosaurs. Education only begins here.
