Part 12 of Chapter 1 in Chemistry

Information about SI Units

15 minSouth May Avenue

Service Description

Grandma gave the Prefixes used with SI units and a table to go with it in Part 11. The book starts with an example after this "of how the prefix works in conjunction with the base unit, consider the term kilometer. The prefix kilo- means "multiply the base by 1000," and so a kilometer is 1000 m. By the same reasoning, a millimeter is 1/1000 m. Because of the prefix system, all units and quantities can be easily related by some factor of 10." Given is the brief table of some SI unit equivalents. The length of 10 millimeters (mm)= 1 centimeter (cm), 100 cm = 1 meter (m), 1000m =1 kilometer (km); with Mass 1000 milligrams (mg) =1 gram (g) and 1000g = 1 kilogram (kg); A unit of length, used especially in expressing the length of light waves, is the nanometer, abbreviated as nm and equal to 10 to the -9th meter. "Because measurements are occasionally reported units of the English system, it is important to be aware of some SI-to-English system equivalents. Some common conversion factors are shown in the following table." 2.54 centimeters=1 inch(in) 1 kilogram=2.2 pounds 1 meter=39.37 inches (10% longer than a yard[yd]) 28.35 grams=1 ounce (oz) 0.946 liter = 1 quart(qt) 454 grams = 1 pound (lb) 1 liter (5% larger than a quart) =1.06 quarts "The SI system standards were chosen as natural standards. The meter was first described as the distance marked off on a platinum-iridium bar but is now defined as the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of" 1/2.99792458 x 10 to the 8th second. "Volume is an example of a 'derived quantity' in the SI system. It is mathematically derived by multiplying the length, width, and height of a regularly shaped object. Since these quantities can all be measured in meters, a derived unit for volume in the SI system is the cubic meter (m to the 3rd), Of course, smaller units of distance could be used. This means that cubic centimeters (cm to the 3) would also represent a derived unit for volume in the SI system." Remember, one mL is the same as one cm to the 3rd, A cm to the 3rd is also referred to as a cc. The book will use a figure of a cube to understand some things. Grandma will have some more book pictures for all to see and use in the next lesson.
