Part eleven, Chapter One, Algebra One
More properties or Rules of Behavior to Numbers in Grandma's Place of Natural Learning.
Service Description
The king in Algebra 1 decided at the end of the Chapter a Precedence Rule must be given for Arithmetic Expressions: Order of Operations was important so we understand which one comes first. "When an expression contains more than one type of operation, perform the operations in the following order:" "Top priority: an operation inside parentheses. For example, in the expression" eight x (seven + six), perform the addition before the multiplication. eight times (seven plus six) = eight times thirteen = one hundred four "Second priority: exponentiations (for more information about exponents, see chapter five). For example, in the expression" four times three to the exponent of two, perform the exponentiation before the multiplication. four times three to the exponent two is equal to four times nine is equal to thirty-six "Third priority: multiplications and divisions. For example, in the expression" eight plus seven times six, perform the multiplication before the addition. eight plus seven times six is equal to eight plus forty-two is equal to fifty " Fourth priority: additions and subtractions." "When an expression contains more than one operation with the same priority, perform the operations in order from left to right. For example, here is how we work out the expression:" seven plus three times six minus four times two plus nine Calculate three times six first: seven plus eighteen minus four times two plus nine Next, calculate four times two: seven plus eighteen minus eight plus nine Next, calculate seven plus eighteen: twenty-five minus eight plus nine Next, calculate twenty-five minus eight: seventeen plus nine The final result is seventeen plus nine is equal to twenty-six To memorize these rules, think of the letters PEMDAS (parentheses-exponents-multiplications-divisions-additions-subtractions). Recordis wanted more practice, so the professor prepared a practice worksheet which was found to be very helpful. It is different than the practice we will use as a test at the end of the chapter. (Grandma will make a separate part for the worksheet before we finish the chapter.)
